Cantilever vs. Centre-pole: what are the differences?Updated a day ago

1️- The pole

A centre-pole parasol is a parasol with the pole positioned underneath the canopy, at its centre. Centre-pole parasols are especially practical for providing shade over a table with a hole in the middle (note that most poles measure 48 mm in diameter), or if you want to create multiple shaded areas, for example with sun loungers around a pool.

In contrast, an offset pole parasol has its pole positioned at one end. These are also referred to as “cantilever” parasols. Cantilever parasols offer greater comfort throughout the day as they can be tilted and can rotate 360°. This allows you to adjust the parasol’s position according to the time of day, ensuring consistent shade.

2️- Wind resistance

Belveo centre-pole parasols are structurally a bit more stable in windy conditions than Belveo offset pole parasols. Cantilever parasols may sway more easily since their weight is distributed differently compared to centre-pole parasols.
The larger the parasol canopy, the more wind it catches.

3️- Which parasols are the most wind-resistant?

All the parasols offered on this site are equipped with Belveo’s patented system, giving them significantly better wind resistance than traditional parasols.

Please note: Belveo parasols are designed to withstand strong winds, but they are not unbreakable. It’s your responsibility to remain cautious, especially if the parasol doesn’t behave as expected in highly irregular wind conditions.

Additional information on parasol wind resistance:

Belveo centre-pole parasols are structurally a bit more stable in windy conditions than Belveo cantilever parasols. Cantilever parasols may sway more easily due to the different distribution of weight.

That’s why we recommend choosing a smaller canopy if you live in a very windy region and want to be able to use your parasol as often as possible.

Whatever size parasol you choose, it's essential to weigh down the base with proper ballast. A variety of ballast options (tiles, anchor bases, and rolling bases) are available on the website to ensure optimal use of your Belveo parasol.
